The Bahamian Project
Fostering Cultural Awareness
The Bahamian Project aims to document the character of those individuals who define what it means to be Bahamian, people who would serve as good role models for young Bahamians in the future.
One of the ways we intend to do that is by launching community-oriented projects that will foster cultural awareness, highlight the positive Bahamian spirit, and show the value of high-quality portraiture.
There will be an emphasis on activities for children in New Providence, Grand Bahama and the Family Islands.
The Bahamian Project activities will include free Workshops and Seminars on Photography for both adults and children, held in collaboration with the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB) and Popopstudios International Center for the Visual Arts.
We plan on holding a series of workshops on portrait photography for children and young adults on various islands of The Bahamas. After the workshops, we will hold portrait photography exhibitions and contests. Disposable cameras will be distributed to participants who do not have cameras.
“We have found that young people see things differently when looking at the world through the viewfinder of a camera.”
Exhibitions will be held with the images also posted on the Bahamian Project website. The young people who submit the best portraits will win fabulous prizes and be featured on the Bahamian Project website.
The goal is to give young people a feeling of their own value and possibilities and foster the relationship between young adults and their portrait subjects, while introducing kids to photography. We have found that young people see things differently when looking at the world through the viewfinder of a camera.
These community activities will help build self-confidence in young adults and allow them the opportunity to succeed in something good, with the possibility of community recognition. It also fosters an awareness of photography and the art of portraiture.
Through the generosity of our sponsors and public donations, the Bahamian Project will preserve, sponsor and present to the public… photographic exhibitions, portfolios, videos, seminars and workshops that highlight the good in Bahamian society and benefit the community by showing the beauty of The Bahamas through its people.
These initiatives are only possible with the help of corporate sponsors and individual patrons.
