A Long Island Legend

Laurin and Susan Knowles walking to their beloved home in Mangrove Bush after watching kids learn how to sail from the dock by their house on the Queen’s Highway.

His straw hat is legendary. Laurin was a master Long Island boat builder and sailor, and passed on his both skills to his son Mark, as well as his sailing skills to his other sons.

All his class B boats are named after his wife. This is hopefully not them walking into the sunset, but Laurin has markedly declined in the past few years. A totally unexpected scene as I was watching the kids sail and snapping photos. Turned around and saw them walking down the lane and kept snapping. If only Laurin had taken Susan’s hand, it would have been perfect.
